I have worked remotely for a decade before it became trendy post-COVID-19. As the tools have gotten better, productivity has increased. Tools are important for enhancing productivity. One such tool is screen recording software. Let’s discuss how it has helped me improve my team's productivity and how it can help you.

Asynchronous Video Communication in Remote Teams

You achieve more through cooperation. Experience has taught me this, and I stand by it. We do this by giving and receiving asynchronous feedback. Remote teams work in different time zones and schedules. This makes synchronous communication a challenge to implement. I implemented this type of communication to help bridge this gap.

I created VideoFeedbackr for this exact reason. We used Loom previously but experienced some frustrations with it. Hassle-free feedback is an enjoyable experience that has helped me and my team enhance productivity.

I have noted how screen recording prevents misunderstandings and streamlines our workflow. It is excellent for communication within tasks but ineffective for regular check-ins. You need synchronous meetings to facilitate proper feedback, something I’ll cover in another piece.

Asynchronous feedback captures the issue in a task. I can pinpoint the exact problem and explain why it doesn’t fit or is an issue for the particular task. I then offer suggestions to my team members that help them rectify the issue. I like this type of feedback because it helps me relay my thoughts. My team members have the video to refer to should they need to confirm something or countercheck the corrections. They also can share it, making it simple to get new procedures to everyone on the team.

Asynchronous video feedback with screen recording is excellent for our productivity, and I am satisfied with how it works for us.

Screen Recording Training and Onboarding

Training tools and Software

I have a Goleko project named How We Do Stuff. I invite my new employees to this project. It has standard operating procedures (SOPs). Each SOP explains specific administrative and professional procedures and is combined with a video package explanation.

Each SOP is augmented with a video explanation. The SOP was initially entirely composed of text. Text is better to scan and copy and paste to where required. I did notice that not everyone fared well with text. There were differences in interpretations and understanding, which prompted the addition of video explanation.

I explain how each procedure works in the video. Using videos to explain these procedures is better than writing them. It has also improved everyone’s understanding and interpretation of the processes. We have the best of both worlds with this feature. I use Goleko to fulfill this project. It is my repository and has the screen recording as comments feature. I use this feature to record the explanatory videos below the text in these SOP tasks.

Onboarding and Productivity

I also use this for our onboarding process. I have created another project called Onboarding. In it, there are specific tasks that. They help my new employees onboard to my team. This project has my responsibilities as the inviting party needs to handle relevant to my new employee. This saves me time I use writing my new employee to get vital information. It protects me from forgetting any crucial parts needed for their onboarding. This project is a template I use to onboard all my new employees. I clone it and make it suitable for my new employee. In it, I have all the responsibilities I need to handle, and my new employee has videos showing them how to maneuver the workstation, interact with the team, submit tasks, and much more.  I use the screen recording as comments feature on Goleko to facilitate this. This has improved our onboarding and working processes.
